| DICKERSON F.C ARE VERY MUCH ALIVE AND KICKING |
|
Contrary to speculation among the local footballing fraternity, particularly the Sunday morning circuit, Dickerson Football Club are very much alive and will feature in the Ipswich Sunday Morning league next season.
Due to unfortunate circumstances, Dickerson FC had to suspend the remaining six fixtures of their 2004/05 Premier division campaign and the committee members took the sensible decision to see out the remaining reserve team fixtures and amalgamate the 1st team and reserves for the 2005/6 season. The League management were extremely helpful to the club during this critical period and automatic relegation of two divisions was welcomed by the clubs committee.
Like the proverbial phoenix rising from the flames, Dickerson FC will be out to champion division two next season and looks forward to the challenge that lies ahead. With a residue of the old first team coupled with the bulk of an excellent reserve team, Dickerson have a good blend of youth and experience to mount a serious challenge for the division two championship.
The club has a very strong committee dedicated to the cause and the team manager, Carl Hawes, along with assistant manager, Neil Walls, both have the committee's total backing and support. Anybody interested in joining a highly respected Ipswich Sunday Morning league side of twenty plus years standing, are invited to attend their training sessions at Walton Recreation ground, Felixstowe every Sunday from 10.30 hrs or contact Carl Hawes on 07736 302301. |

If you would like to sponsor us or play for us, please contact chairman Andy Wilding on andrew.wilding1@btinternet.com. |

| Chairman tackles league through the media |
|
Dear Elvin King,
I read with much interest your article in regard Ipswich Sunday Football League fines imposed on Chantry Grasshoppers FC and in particular regard to your request for views from other clubs.
I have been invloved in Sunday morning football for far more years than I care to remember and for the vast majority with Dickerson FC, registered with the Ipswich Sunday Morning League. Most of the time I have been invloved at committee level so you will understand that I have seen a number of fines imposed on my club by the SMFL for the most pettiest of crimes. One I can particularly remember was that we had two brothers - David and Kevin Jacobs - playing for us and we inadvertantly transposed their league computer numbers - Kevin was given David's number and vice versa - clearly an honest mistake but none the less the league duly imposed a fine for an incorrect result card. The most recent was a £10.00 fine because the SMFL claim that both our 1st team and reserve team result cards were received after the allowed date for the league to recieve the result cards. Well, bearing in mind that the time of year was early December, and the fact that the number of cards and letters being handled by the postal system at that time of year, it is hardly surprising that some result cards will not reach their destination by the time they are supposed to. One would have thought the SMFL would have the forthought to make allowances for the time of year but oh no! the result cards are late so a fine must be paid. I dare say also that the SMFL will fine us heavily AND deduct points because we were genuinely unable to put out a full team to meet a Premier division fixture due to a flu/stomach bug that had 'been doing the rounds' locally which meant that, coupled with injuries and suspensions, we simply did not have enough players to put out a side. The league will doubtless tell us that the 1st team fixtures should always take precedence over the reserves and it is the reserve team that should suffer the fate of a non fixture, but, and as the SMFL will know very well, Suffolk County cup competitions take precedence over league fixtures and our reserves were involved in a County competition that same morning.
I absolutely agree with Nick Ward in that junior football clubs in the Sunday Morning League (and the Licensed Trades League for that matter) simply cannot command big name sponsors to shower them with £'000s - to cover expenses a whole season through, so we have to rely on the players paying an annual registration fee and match subs. Dickerson FC's annual budget is in the region of £4000 per season (we operate a 1st team and a reserve team) and that's just to cover league registration, County registration, hire of pitches, referees expenses, kit wash expenses, the replacement of kit items, footballs and 1st aid equipment. We do make a small allowance for 'errs and errors' but not for thoughtless pettyness. We all make mistakes (even the league make a number of untold mistakes) and whilst I whole heartedly accept that there has to be league rules to make us check what we are doing so as to avoid these petty fines, a little bit of leniency from the league will help the finances of junior football clubs. 1st mistake - just a notification, 2nd mistake - a slap on the wrists and don't do it again and a 3rd mistake - ok, fine accepted.
I personally believe that if the SMFL do not become more lenient with their fines more and more clubs will, as Nick Ward rightly suggests, fold and what in the last 35 years or so has been a Sunday Morning hobby for the most, will become a thing of the past. |
